Joe Mongelli

content joemongelli headshot2Joe Mongelli's music draws on a broad, eclectic background of performance experience spanning 30 years. From small group jazz to swinging big bands, symphony orchestras to avante garde free jazz, Dixieland, funk and rock, Joe has played it all.

His trumpet and fluegl horns resonate with a remarkable range of styles. Attentive listeners will hear the cool, lean approach of Miles Davis, the bop lyricism of Clifford Brown, the hard bop/funk influence of Freddy Hubbard, and of course, the traditional Dixieland figures of Louie Armstrong.

Joe makes extensive use of classic standards from the American Song Book for the raw material of his musical canvas. But he makes these classics his own with unique arrangements not heard elsewhere.

A talented composer and arranger, Joe has over 50 compositions to his credit including many original compositions and arrangements for Big Band. Other compositions include standard-influenced ballads, fusion and hard-bop jazz pieces, New Age, Techno and environmental music, orchestral and choral settings and his 2003 Elegy for 9/11.

Some of Joe's original Big Band music was featured on the 2009 CD released by the Boston Horns Big Band: Originals Volume 1. This CD includes a solo performance by Joe on his piece Rearview Mirror and guest performances by Grammy award winners Mark Walker and Oscar Stagnaro. It is available at www.bostonhorns.com. Original small group jazz pieces and new arrangements of traditional standards can also be found on Joe's 2003 CD: Joe Mongelli and Friends - Now and Then, some of which has been aired by the NPR radio station WICN in Worcester, MA.

While playing with the Boston Horns Big Band, Joe played jazz opposite multiple-Grammy award winner Pacquito D'Rivera at the Essex Peabody Museum in 2007. His trio, Portrait in Jazz, played for 5 consecutive years at the Primavera restaurant in Millis MA. Other venues where he has performed in the Boston area include Sculler's Jazz Club, Ryle's Jazz Club, the Berklee Performance Center, and The Center for Arts in Natick. On Cape Cod, Joe has appeared regularly at the Gran Cru Wine Bar, (Cape Codder Resort – Hyannis) and Bubala's in Provincetown. He has also played at the Provincetown Art Association & Museum, the Cultural Center of Cape Cod and the Chatham Bars Inn.

Joe received his Master's Degree in music performance from Manhattan School of Music where he was a featured soloist in the Manhattan School Big Band and small group jazz ensembles. While an undergraduate at New York University, he studied jazz performance with Jimmy Giuffre. He has also studied big band arranging with famous arranger Don Sebesky.
